Head Brewer at Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery in Homestead, Meg Evans has worked in the beer industry for more than seven years. A native of Jamestown NY, Meg has done everything from gluing boxes and labeling bottles to designing beer recipes and brewing beer. For Meg, a passion for beer runs deep — and in the family. She’s married to brewer James Evans and together, the pair founded the annual Pittsburgh Brewtal Beer Fest in 2016 as a way to merge their love for beer and heavy metal music. Meg and James are very excited about their upcoming move to Pittsburgh’s Allentown neighborhood.

Best part of your job?

My favorite part of my job is the ability to be creative. Whether I’m experimenting with a new recipe, technique, or simply trying to figure out the best way to attack a problem, I’m challenged in a new way that makes work interesting.

Favorite Pittsburgh brewery?

If I should steer away from mine or my husband’s (Spoonwood Brewing Company), I’d have to go with Roundabout Brewery [in Lawrenceville].

Last photo you took on your phone?

It was a photo of my dog, Bruce Wayne. @thebarkknight_pgh is your favorite new Instagram page.

Which Pittsburgh food truck do you want parked outside your house?

Podcast you’re addicted to?

I have a few favorites:

The Sour Hour — to feed my love for mixed fermentation.
Last Podcast on the Left — for some horror fun.
Monday Morning Podcast with Bill Burr — for my weekly laughs.
The Jasta Show — for my dose of metal.

Which Pittsburgh band would you like to play in your living room?

Through my beer festival, Brewtal Beer Fest, I’ve had the pleasure to work with some pretty incredible local bands. I’ll have to go with my boys in Greywalker. They work hard and have some killer music.

What’s your Pittsburgh comfort food?

Leona’s Ice Cream Sandwiches.

Best thing about Pittsburgh or Western PA?

One thing I’ve admired about this region is that it is full of really bold, creative people. It’s inspiring to see this happen. Being around these incredible people has kept me motivated to consistently push myself toward my goals.

Where will we find you on a Sunday morning?

You’ll find me relaxing with my husband and our dogs, Bruce Wayne (Boston Terrier) and Sierra (Golden Retriever mix), or out on a walk.

What upcoming events are you excited attend?

On December 23, Brewtal Beer Fest is teaming up with our friends at Dancing Gnome Brewery and Mr. Smalls Presents to host the event, “A Very Intimate Evening With Punchline” at Black Forge Coffee House in Allentown.

At the end of December, I will travel to New York City for the second-to-last Dillinger Escape Plan show at Terminal 5. Pretty psyched not only to see a couple of bands that I love, but also to explore NYC a bit.

See who else is NEXT Up here.
