Kelly Strayhorn Theater
7 p.m. – midnight
Dance your way into the summer party circuit at Full Bloom.
With expanded programming and world-class productions, the Kelly Strayhorn is a central force in the ongoing transformation of East Liberty. The theater’s signature benefit bash features live performances by local and visiting artists, festive music and activities and a sampling of top fare from East Liberty.
For its sixth annual installment, Full Bloom boasts a concert by dancer and vocalist Vie Boheme (aka Kendra Dennard), thrilling feats by aerialist Kelsey Keller, an exclusive opera performance by Anqwenique Wingfield and REDMOOSEPRESENTS, performances by Continuum Dance Theater, a photo booth and an outdoor beer garden.
Providing the night’s dance grooves will be DJ J. Malls, of the popular soul and funk night Titletown, along with DJ Vex. Full Bloom kicks off at 7 p.m., with a VIP reception featuring music by DJ Lovelife.
All proceeds from Full Bloom will go toward supporting East Liberty LIVE!, a summer series produced by the Kelly Strayhorn Theater that provides arts programming for children, families and friends who live in, work in and enjoy visiting the East End. The lively series also spotlights the neighborhood’s unique cultural amenities for both first-time patrons and residents alike.
As the last of nine theaters from East Liberty’s 1950s heyday, the Kelly Strayhorn Theater continues to use the arts as a catalyst for community revitalization. An intimate, professionally equipped, 349-seat multiple-use performance venue, the theater showcases emerging artists and arts organizations who create challenging and compelling new work. Now in its 12th season, the site originally opened in 1914 as the Regent Theatre, which served the East End as a movie house for eight decades. Its namesakes, legendary Pittsburghers Gene Kelly and Billy Strayhorn, are among the 80 area artists honored on the theater’s Gallery of Stars.
