Fans of Anna Deavere Smith should not miss the chance to see the prolific playwright, actor and educator on Friday night.

Smith is appearing for the third installment of the TRUTHSayers series, which provides a platform for “activists to voice their knowledge and concern for the future of community, equality and freedom.” This year’s series features thought-provoking lectures and discussions with groundbreaking Black female activists.

Currently artist-in-residence with the Center for American Progress, Smith is the recipient of a 2016 MacArthur Foundation “Genius” Fellowship. She is acclaimed for her innovative brand of theatre, which combines activism and the artistic process to explore issues such as community, character and diversity in America.

The creator of 15 one-woman shows, Smith was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Obama in 2012. She has also appeared in several films, including “Philadelphia,” “Dave” and “Rachel Getting Married.” Her television work includes recurring roles on “The Practice,” “The West Wing” and “Nurse Jackie.”
