April 5 – 26
On the heels of the Trump administration’s tight new restrictions on American travel and trade with Cuba, a new art exhibition is showcasing artists from the northern Caribbean island in Pittsburgh.
Hosting a month of exhibitions and events, the Cub’Art Project features five Cuban artists — four of whom have never exhibited work in the U.S.
Curated by gallery owner Christine Fréchard — who traveled to Cuba last summer to explore its vibrant art scene — the series features contemporary paintings by Jesus Gastell, Duhamel Xolot, Yamiliany Morales Ferras, Dayron Simon Rivero and Jose Luis Cabrera. Gastell, Xolot and Ferras have just arrived in Pittsburgh to participate in exhibition-related events.
Cub’Art kicks off with a gala with the artists at Phipps on April 5. Not to miss is the opening reception at Ryan Lammie’s new Gallery One|Collective Works on April 7. Head to the Fairmont for a lobby exhibition and art brunch on April 14, 21 and 28.
Additional events include a discussion at Alphabet City, programs at California University and an exhibition at Phipps.
