Spend your lunch break on Wednesday helping to raise awareness about and show your support for refugees and immigrants in our region.
The Jewish Family & Children’s Service of Pittsburgh is joining forces with dozens of community-wide partners to host a World Refugee Day celebration in the heart of Downtown. The free, all-ages event takes place during national Immigrant Heritage Month.
Showcasing the contributions, talents and perspectives of Pittsburgh’s refugee and immigrant communities, the event will feature dance, music and drumming performances, poetry readings, culinary and craft booths, and hands-on children’s activities.
Attendees can sample foods from Iraq, Syria and West Africa, learn crafts from Bhutan, the Congo and Mexico, peruse works from Ten Thousand Villages and Ujamaa Collective, and much more. Featured performers include the Children of Shangri-Lost, Prospect Park Family Center Youth, Salsa 412, Tuhin Das, and others.
Approximately 12 immigrants will share their stories and take their oath of citizenship during a naturalization ceremony.
A wide range of organizational partners and local refugee groups are participating, such as the Bhutanese Community Association of Pittsburgh, Casa San Jose, Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council, Somali Bantu Community Association of Pittsburgh, and many others.
